Lime VP of Sustainability Named Among Top Leaders Driving Climate Action
We are proud to share that our very own VP of Sustainability and part of the Founding Team at Lime, Andrew Savage, has been named as one of this year's top 100 climate leaders by TIME. The annual list recognizes individuals making significant contributions to combating climate change.
The list includes diverse figures, from scientists, activists, entrepreneurs, and political leaders, to influential thinkers and innovators across various sectors. These leaders drive tangible, positive change and inspire others to take action in response to the climate crisis.
Paving the way
Since Lime's inception, Andrew has helped Lime emerge as a global leader in sustainable transportation while demonstrating the positive impact that shared micromobility can have in moving toward a decarbonized future. He did this by centering sustainability in Lime's mission, setting high, measurable standards and implementing bold scalable solutions.
"If we are able to rethink the dominant role of cars, which sit idle and parked 95% of their lives, we can free up enormous space for affordable housing, parks, protected bike lanes, and other things that make cities far more livable, while also significantly reducing carbon pollution," notes Savage.
Lime’s carbon reduction journey
Andrew led the company’s ambitious carbon targets via the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), becoming the first company in the industry with a validated net zero target – and one of just a couple dozen companies worldwide with such an aggressive 2030 target. Lime is several years ahead of our target, reducing carbon intensity by 59.5% from the 2019 baseline. These figures include Lime's company-wide Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions including its supply chain and upstream transportation.
Through initiatives including extending scooter lifetime, increasing parts reuse and using zero emissions operations vehicles, Lime drove down life cycle emissions by 84% in less than three years. Fraunhofer ISI, a leading German research institute, in November 2022 published the net positive impact of Lime's service, achieving a breakthrough from prior academic studies.
Sustainable innovation in motion
100% renewable power
Lime was the first shared electric vehicle company to power all e-bikes, e-scooters and facilities on 100% renewable energy. Lime has partnered with more than two dozen energy providers globally for locally-sourced renewables and has purchased more than 40,000MW to-date.
Electric vehicle operations
Lime joined The Climate Group's EV100, committing to fully transition Lime's gas vehicles to electric well-ahead of the Group's 2030 target. Lime has transitioned over 68% of vehicles to-date– adding more than 115 new electric vehicles, a 40% increase, since June 2022.
Innovative battery recycling
Lime launched an initiative to utilize second life battery cells from otherwise inoperable e-bike batteries in London for bluetooth speakers made of recycled plastic bags by sustainable design company, Gomi, and more recently with French firm, VoltR. These initiatives gained global attention and provided a North Star for future second life initiatives at Lime.
Zero-emission shipping
In March 2024, Lime became one of the first companies globally to commit to the World Economic Forum's 'Mission Possible Partnership' for zero emissions international shipping and began a partnership with Hight Logistics using electric trucks to provide zero emissions port-to-hub transportation for all of Lime's new vehicles and parts arriving by port in North America.
The future is (Lime) green
Through his internal leadership setting ambitious climate goals, pioneering new initiatives, driving substantial carbon reductions and his external advocacy as a forceful spokesperson for a world without reliance on cars, Andrew has demonstrated that environmental sustainability can be a force for financial sustainability.
Lime's sustainability commitments have aligned with the external accountability of leading global sustainability organizations like The Climate Group, The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), WWF, The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and The World Economic Forum.
Congratulations to Andrew and the entire Lime team advancing our sustainability leadership on this well-deserved recognition!
