VoltR × Lime: the partnership giving batteries a useful second life

VoltR, a Deeptech company specializing in eco-design of lithium batteries, partners with Lime, the global leader in shared electric mobility. Together, they aim to extend the lifespan of Lime’s electric bike and e-scooter batteries through battery cell reuse, supporting a circular economy and more sustainable urban mobility.
A Collaboration for Greener Mobility
Lime's vehicle batteries are designed for performance and durability. However, even when damaged and no longer useful for mobility, many individual cells remain operational and can be repurposed for other valuable use cases.
Lime stands out as the only operator of electric bikes and scooters that designs its own vehicles and batteries, providing better control over its environmental impact. This has allowed the company to cut its emissions intensity by 59.5% since 2019(the baseline for its net zero target).
This partnership marks a significant advance in reducing the carbon footprint of urban mobility. VoltR, a pioneer in France in the collection and recycling of lithium batteries, will bring its expertise to support Lime's environmental goals.
Strengthened Commitment to Sustainability
Lime has set ambitious sustainability goals validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). “At Lime, sustainability is at the heart of our business. We’ve invested in the design, production, and end-of-life management of our electric vehicles,” says Andrew Savage, Vice President of Sustainability at Lime. “By giving a second life to battery cells, we reinforce our circular approach in line with our sustainability mission.”

Innovative Battery Refurbishment Process
Recycling, though essential, often occurs too early in a battery’s life cycle. Remanufacturing—reusing cells from used batteries—preserves more value. Leveraging artificial intelligence, VoltR reassigns cells from batteries that are no longer suitable for Lime's electric vehicles but still functional, transforming them into new batteries.
“Our mission is to maximize the value of batteries by giving them a new life,” emphasizes Alban Regnier, co-founder of VoltR. By the end of the year, VoltR plans to refurbish over 1,000 batteries from Lime vehicles.
A Shared Vision for a Circular Economy
By reusing batteries that would otherwise be recycled, Lime and VoltR are contributing to the creation of a more environmentally friendly industry.
