Lime And Brisbane’s QUT Students Work To Improve Helmet Safety In Australia

In Australia, riding an electric scooter means strapping on a helmet. Like cyclists, scooter riders throughout the country are legally required to wear head protection every time they head out on the road.
That’s why last week, micromobility leader Lime paired up with the Creative Enterprise team at Queensland University of Technology’s Gardens Point Campus in Brisbane to develop innovative new strategies around helmet safety and education.
Step one of the process brought students out into the field, talking with scooter riders and assessing the challenges associated with mandatory helmet usage. Later, they returned to the classroom to discuss their findings and map out potential solutions.
“It was a great professional development session for the students," said Marvin Fox, Programs UX Champion at QUT Creative Enterprise. "A lot of the comments from the participants mentioned how much they benefited from working with real problems from real industry connections.”
Proposed strategies ranged from developing in-app technological enhancements to launching social media influencer campaigns, all focused on increasing public awareness and adoption of helmet safety regulations in Australia.
“Working with QUT students to think outside the box in keeping riders safe is a great opportunity for a local partnership to have a global impact,” said Mayank Mittal, Lime’s APAC Head of University Partnerships. “Young problem-solvers deal with issues in a forward-thinking and innovative way, so we’re excited to analyze and implement their ideas.”
Limewill be exploring ways to put the ideas generated by QUT's students into a concrete plan of action tailored to Australian riders. Since arriving in the country, the company has distributed over 10,000 helmets as part ofaglobal Respect The Ride Campaign.
