Lime, the world’s leading provider of shared e-bikes and e-scooters, today announced it has invested $17 million to date in 2026 to launch Keeping DC Moving, a five-point action plan to bolster reliability, safety and equity across its DC service. The action plan focuses on enhancing Lime’s service for DC residents to make traveling on two wheels the easiest and most reliable way to get around the district. The $17 million investment supports a complete fleet overhaul–including the introduction of Lime’s latest vehicle, the LimeBike; additional staffing for vehicle maintenance and street tidiness; Lime’s newest on-vehicle technology to deter irresponsible riding and more. Through its Keeping DC Moving Plan, Lime aims to lay the groundwork for the next era of District’s thriving micromobility program.

“Washington DC is one of the great shared micromobility cities in the world and we’re eager to invest in its future,” said Wayne Ting, CEO, Lime. “Our Keeping DC Moving Plan affirms that with the significant growth of two-wheeled transportation in this city, it's incumbent upon companies like Lime to keep pace in providing a world-class service residents deserve. We’re intent on serving Washington DC for years to come and we will continue to emphasize equitable access to our vehicles, aim to deliver the highest standard of operational excellence, encourage safe riding and proper parking, provide top-of-the-line hardware and technology and sustain a robust team equipped to serve the nation’s capital.”

Lime’s Keeping DC Moving plan is a response to District residents and visitors increasingly relying on shared micromobility to get around. Whether to commute to work and school, run errands, visit friends and family or bridge gaps through affordable and equitable transportation, Lime has become a core part of Washington DC’s mobility mix. Lime’s plan draws upon its deep community ties, strong rider base and extensive operational experience as the capital’s longest-serving dockless micromobility provider to deliver a meaningful impact for residents. It is informed by conversations with the District Department of Transportation, city and elected officials, riders, community members and more.

Lime in Washington DC by the numbers:

  • Since Lime launched in 2017, millions of riders have traveled more than 43 million miles.

  • Over 11,000 DC residents have taken trips through the Lime Access program, which provides significant discounts to residents who receive city or federal subsidies.

  • Lime Access riders have completed more than 4.5 million rides in DC, with Access ridership doubling from the first six months of 2025 to the first six months of 2026, underscoring its utility in helping people get around the city.

  • Lime rider surveys show that around two-thirds of riders use Lime to commute to work and/or school, underscoring the indispensable role micromobility plays in its users' daily lives.

  • Over 45% of riders identify Lime as one of their main forms of transportation.

  • 29% of riders said they have taken Lime to medical appointments.

Keeping DC Moving: Five-Point Action Plan

Lime’s $17 million investment in 2026 covers a range of key areas important to Washington DC riders, city officials, and non-riders alike. This investment focuses on:

1. Fleet refresh, featuring a new ride: Lime is in the midst of a fleet refresh across more than 8,000 e-bikes and e-scooters, which means fresh-out-the-box vehicles and Lime’s newest vehicle, the LimeBike

  • The LimeBike: Lime’s newest e-bike has arrived in DC. The LimeBike was designed to be Lime’s most inclusive ride yet, with features that aim to make it more approachable and easier to use for a wider range of riders. The design incorporates a lower step-through frame, an easily adjustable seat with new ergonomic clamp design and 20-inch (50cm) diameter wheels for a more compact feel. Riders will also love the LimeBike’s ergonomic hand grips aimed at reducing fatigue, a redesigned, vertically-mounted, secure phone holder for easier navigation, and a wider, lower-positioned front basket to accommodate larger items. Lime will gradually transition its entire fleet of e-bikes from the Gen4 to the LimeBike.

  • Fleet Refresh: The arrival of the LimeBike is part of a larger fleet refresh to ensure Washington DC riders have access to some of Lime’s newest vehicles, fresh off the assembly line. This significant investment in new hardware will improve service reliability and deliver a fleet worthy of one of the nation’s leading micromobility programs. New vehicles are already on the ground, with more expected in the coming months.

2. Cutting Edge Innovation: hi-tech solutions to improve parking, encourage safe riding and deter irresponsible or illegal riding, including underage riding

  • Through this investment in Washington DC, Lime has started to deploy a range of new features focused on providing a safe, responsible and intuitive service.

  • In an effort to prevent underage riding, Lime requires every rider to verify their age ahead of taking a ride. Lime has invested in an AI-enabled software solution to verify rider ages and since turning this feature on in the spring, thousands of rides have been blocked due to suspected underage riding.

  • Lime’s latest on-board feature, its Responsible Riding Technology, will be deployed on e-scooters in Washington DC starting this fall, making it among the first markets in the world to launch this feature.
    • Responsible Ride Technology uses sensors on Lime’s e-scooters to identify prohibited riding behavior, including burnouts, jumps and skidding. If detected, Lime will send riders messages after their rides reminding them to ride responsibly. Repeated prohibited riding behavior will result in fines and account suspensions, including up to expulsion.

  • Lime has also begun to deploy its Tandem Riding Detection technology in Washington DC to deter two people riding on a single e-scooter.
    • Lime e-scooters equipped with this on-board technology will be able to detect when multiple riders are on a single vehicle and send a warning that only one rider is allowed on a vehicle.

  • LimeVision expansion across full e-scooter fleet to deter sidewalk riding
    • LimeVision uses an AI-enabled, downward-facing onboard camera to detect when a scooter is being ridden on the sidewalk.

    • In areas where sidewalk riding is prohibited, riders using a scooter on the sidewalk will hear audible alerts and receive post-trip warnings through in-app notifications. Alerts continue until they either return to the road bed or end the trip.

    • Lime uses a progressive enforcement system to warn, fine and even ban repeat offenders.

  • Keeping DC Moving includes investment in AI-assisted technology to provide real-time feedback to improve parking.
    • Lime uses a third-party AI-enabled augmented reality technology that provides real-time feedback to riders when parking to confirm they have parked in compliance with DC regulations. All riders are prompted to take a photo of their parking at the end of trips, which combined with manual review, supports Lime’s efforts to ensure vehicles are parked tidily and out of the way of pedestrians. Lime also uses this solution to warn, fine and potentially even ban riders who repeatedly park improperly.

3. Delivering Operational Excellence: increased staffing and Foot Patrols to improve service reliability and keep DC streets tidy

  • Keeping DC Moving builds on the success of Lime’s current Foot Patrol program, increasing staffing by at least 200%, with ability to scale based on need. Foot Patrol teams address misparked vehicles, monitor key hotspots, rebalance vehicles to ensure availability (including in equity zones) and tidy up devices in the public right-of-way. This also includes resources to scale staffing up for major events such as the capital’s 4th of July celebrations and busy summer season.

  • Lime’s increased staffing includes operations team members for warehouse and street teams, vehicle maintenance, deployment and rebalancing, and addressing misparked vehicles. The increased capacity aims to improve service reliability, sustain vehicle quality and keep streets organized and tidy.

4. Opening Up DC for All: Lime Access program and equitable deployment of vehicles

  • Keeping DC Moving has deepened Lime’s commitment to equity and access for all, both of which have always been fundamental pillars of Lime’s service to the District. Lime focuses on ensuring equitable access to its service through ample fleet availability east of the Anacostia River, especially Wards 7 and 8, as well as reduced price rides for qualifying riders through Lime Access. Lime Access provides significant discounts to all DC residents who are eligible to receive city or federal subsidies, e.g. SNAP benefits, Pell Grants, Medicaid and more.

  • The Lime Access program has grown significantly in usage over the past year, with ridership doubling from the first six months of 2025 to the first six months of 2026. A portion of Lime’s $17 million investment accounts for this growth through subsidizing reduced priced rides.

  • Keeping DC Moving builds upon Lime’s efforts to make riding more affordable, especially for its most frequent riders, through the launch of LimePrime in March of this year. For a low monthly fee, LimePrime subscribers enjoy low-cost flat-rate rides under 20 minutes, with reduced per-minute pricing after that and no unlock fee. Through LimePrime, LimePasses–minutes bundles priced below Lime’s standard per-minute pricing–and its traditional pay as you go pricing, Lime offers multiple pricing options to fit riders’ habits, needs and preferences, meeting riders where they are and supporting the city’s mission to provide affordable transportation options for all.

5. Championing Our Communities: deep community engagement

  • Keeping DC Moving will see Lime double down on its longtime commitment to community engagement.

  • Lime has always viewed community engagement as vital in Washington DC and has partnered with many local organizations including Washington Area Cyclist Association (WABA), Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges), NoMa BID, AdMo BID, Capital Pride Alliance, Greater Greater Washington (GGWASH).

  • With Keeping DC Moving, Lime has increased investment in terms of time, resources and financial commitments in order to work with these groups and more to bring more people into the program, especially District residents who might benefit from Lime Access as well as encourage safe riding, hold extra in-person events teaching people to ride safely and follow the rules of the road and spread the word about how important it is to park properly or face warnings, fines and possible bans.
