Scooters In Montréal: Lime Brings Micromobility To Canada’s 2nd Largest City

Less than a month after e-scooters made their highly-anticipated debut in Calgary, Canada’s second-largest city has officially launched a micromobility fleet of its own.
More than 400 Lime scooters rolled out in Montreal this week, days after officials approved the industry leader’s permit request to operate on city grounds. Scooters will initially be available in the following neighbourhoods, with more expected to be added soon:
- Ville-Marie
- Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce
- Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension
- Westmount
“We’re excited to get to work increasing mobility access, preventing carbon emissions and reducing traffic for all Montrealers,” said Mike Markevich, Lime’s General Manager of Canada East. “Together with city officials, we’re educating our riders on the importance of scooter safety, respecting traffic laws and utilizing proper parking zones starting from their very first ride.”
To help riders get accustomed to this new form of dockless mobility, designated parking areas have been created and marked throughout the city, each with the ability to hold a maximum of four scooters. All first-time riders in Montreal are also taken through an in-app tutorial before being allowed to unlock a scooter.
According to Markevich, thousands of residents have been downloading the app every day since launch, mirroring the rapid early-adoption rates experienced in Calgary in July.
The rollout comes as Montreal, which is ranked among the most bike-friendly cities in the world, has recently renewed its commitment to improved cycling infrastructure and alternative transportation. In May, Mayor Valérie Plante announced her ambitious plan for the Réseau Express Vélo (REV), or Express Cycling Network, that will either create, improve or protect 184 km of bike and scooter trails throughout Montreal over the next two years.
