The Code Of The Road: Moving Towards A Public Space Where All People Can Travel Together

As Lime observes a surge in demand for its electric bike-sharing service in a constantly evolving metropolis like Paris, harmonious cohabitation among the various users of public space has become a major challenge. The introduction of The Street Code, adopted during the Paris Council meeting on July 6, 2023, is a significant and necessary step to ensure the safety and serenity of all citizens.
The Revolution Of The Code Of The Road
This document sets out twelve essential rules aimed at restoring balance in public space. It emphasizes prioritizing pedestrians while incorporating provisions to regulate new modes of sustainable mobility, such as bicycles.
The 12 Rules of the Code of the Road:
Always respect pedestrian priority
Do not ride motorized two-wheelers, scooters, or bicycles on sidewalks
Do not encroach on bus lanes and bike lanes
Do not exceed the speed limit and respect traffic lights and signs
Wait before entering a crowded intersection
Park your vehicle only in authorized spaces
Do not drive while intoxicated
Check before opening your door by opening it with your right hand
Honk only in case of immediate danger
Be vigilant and pay attention to the most vulnerable individuals
Cross at pedestrian crossings
Look both ways before crossing the street

For A Calm Public Space
The adoption of this Code stems from a participatory consultation involving over 114,000 participants, revealing a strong citizen desire for better security in public spaces. Initiatives such as the citizen vote on dockless scooters marked the beginning of this evolution, highlighting the need to rethink our relationship with urban mobility.
Pedestrian Priority
The Code of the Road clearly establishes pedestrian priority, representing 66% of trips in Paris. It aims to ensure unobstructed walking spaces by widening sidewalks and transforming side streets into accessible promenades for all.
Concrete Measures For An Inclusive City
This Code also aims to ensure the safety of children, disabled individuals, and seniors. Pedestrianized streets and specific amenities will allow the most vulnerable to move around safely.
Regulation Of Sustainable Mobility
One of the cornerstones of this Code lies in regulating new modes of mobility. Lime, a leader in micromobility, joins this initiative by disseminating prevention messages echoing those of the Street Code through its application, aiming to raise awareness and promote responsibility among its user community.
