Empowering Communities: The 2024 Lime Mobility Insights Competition

About the competition

In an innovative partnership aimed at reshaping mobility, Lime, in collaboration with the League of American Bicyclists, has unveiled the 2024 Lime Mobility Insights Competition. This initiative seeks to empower two U.S. communities by leveraging comprehensive datasets and expert analyses to address critical transportation issues such as safety, equity, and accessibility.

A Mission for the Future

At Lime, our mission is to build a future where transportation is shared, affordable, and carbon-free. Through strategic partnerships with cities and communities across the globe, we've dedicated ourselves to understanding and mitigating the challenges faced by urban mobility systems. From reducing fare programs to enhancing safety protocols, our efforts are grounded in a commitment to making cities more safe, equitable and sustainable for everyone.

Meet our 2024 winners

We are thrilled to announce the 2024 winners of the competition - congratulations to the cities of Bloomington and Washington D.C.!

Cities across the country submitted their applications, showcasing innovative ideas on how to use Lime data to improve their local infrastructure and safety measures. After a rigorous review process, Bloomington and Washington D.C. stood out for their exceptional proposals and commitment to making their streets safer for everyone.

For the two winning cities, we are excited to use Lime data to help improve safety and provide actionable insights that address specific transportation issues that exacerbate the risks for vulnerable road users. By analyzing Lime's trip and crash data, we have an opportunity to help cities make better infrastructure decisions to improve safety for all

“We are excited to partner with other industry leaders to address transportation issues that impact residents and visitors who use bicycles, e-bikes and scooters to travel around the District,” said Acting DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum. “Lime’s data and research will help our mission to offer all roadway users equitable, safe, sustainable and reliable ways to travel."

"The City of Bloomington has made recent strides towards increased transportation safety and equity, but we understand that we have a long way to go to provide a low-stress network for all street users. This partnership with Lime and the League of American Bicyclists allows us to combine resources and discover new insights into what next steps the City can take to further increase safety and comfort in our community," said Hank Duncan, City of Bloomington’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator.

The Competition: A Catalyst for Change and Innovation

The 2024 Lime Mobility Insights Competition, co-hosted with the League of American Bicyclists, represents a transformative opportunity for communities. While Lime regularly collaborates with cities, sharing data and insights to foster improvement in urban mobility, this competition takes our existing efforts a step further. It offers unique access to both Lime's comprehensive datasets on travel, safety, and surveys, as well as the expert knowledge from Lime’s team and the League's Bicycle Friendly America program. This partnership focuses on tackling the prevalent challenges cities face, offering:

  • Access to Extensive Datasets: Participants can delve into Lime's detailed trip, safety, and survey data, unlocking new insights and understanding mobility patterns in unprecedented ways.

  • Expert Collaboration: The competition enables working closely with leading urban planners and researchers from Lime, along with the experienced professionals from the League's Bicycle Friendly America team. This synergy aims to blend data-driven insights with practical experience to confront and solve urban mobility challenges.

  • Tailored Solutions: Communities will benefit from receiving custom reports or presentations, designed to address their specific needs and challenges. This personalized approach ensures that the solutions are not only relevant but also actionable.

  • Opportunity to Showcase Work: A significant part of the competition is the chance to present findings and achievements in a webinar, co-hosted by Lime and the League. This platform is an excellent way to share successes and lessons learned with a broader audience, underlining the commitment to sustainable mobility.

Through this initiative, Lime and the League of American Bicyclists invite communities to rethink transportation, leveraging both data and expert knowledge to drive meaningful change.

Inspiring Change: Lime's Data-Driven Impact Worldwide

Lime's initiatives and data-driven partnerships have not only provided insights but also inspired actionable changes around the world. Here's a closer look at how Lime's data has catalyzed improvements and research across different regions:

Enhancing Equity with Lime Access: In 2023, Lime partnered with Monash University to examine the impact of the Lime Access program in a dozen cities across three countries: Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The study found that Lime Access riders, who benefit from reduced fares, are more likely to be locals using the service for essential trips. These riders often combine Lime with public transit, highlighting the program's role in facilitating utilitarian travel and underscoring the essential nature of affordable mobility options.

Safety Insights and Improvements: Lime's commitment to safety is exemplified through its regular sharing of comprehensive safety reports. These reports, which detail collision severity, trends, and mitigation tactics, have been instrumental in cities like Seattle. Analysis revealed that 60% of Lime-reported injuries occurred on streets lacking bicycle infrastructure, emphasizing the need for safer biking environments.

Promoting Safe Streets: A collaboration with the University of Southern California investigated the effects of 'slow streets' on Lime ridership. This study showcased Lime's unique position to offer city-wide, long-term data, revealing a significant increase in dockless trips on slow streets, compared to similar roadways without such designations.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the Mobility Insights Competition extends to U.S. communities that are not only Lime cities but also current or aspiring members of the Bicycle Friendly America program. This criteria ensures that participants are already aligned with the principles of sustainable and accessible urban mobility.
