Lime teams up with the AA and DriveTech to launch online driving school to inform and protect e‑scooter riders and fellow road users

Safety is our top priority at Lime, which is why we’re proud to announce the launch of our online e-scooter driving school - the first British online school of its kind - developed in partnership with the AA and DriveTech. The school is designed specifically to provide assistance to riders using e-scooters for the first time as part of ongoing trials in the UK, and - drawing on the AA and DriveTech’s unparalleled road safety experience - also aims to inform other road users how to interact with e-scooters safely.

The AA is one of the UK’s largest and most respected motoring organisations, and we’re honoured to feature advice and guidance from their President Edmund King OBE as part of our driving school, which also include videos on recommended safety equipment, starting your ride and parking responsibly.

The driving school will be available on Lime’s UK website and our app. As part of our efforts to raise industry standards for responsible scooter use, we will also publish usage figures for Lime’s driving school at regular intervals, with an ambition to achieve a usage rate of over 50% of all riders via targeted incentivisation, such as providing free rides.

Lime’s driving school, which will be available to use in the coming days, builds on pre-existing safeguards to protect riders and other road users, including mandatory in-app safety training, regular rider safety messages and helmet giveaways, and two factor driving license recognition technology.

Edmund King OBE, President of the AA said: “E-scooters can help to transform movement within our towns and cities in a safe, affordable, and fun way. Safety is fundamental for the AA, DriveTech and Lime. As e-scooters are a new and recently legalised form of transport as part of UK-wide public rental trials, the need to operate and share the roads safely is paramount. It’s great to be working with Lime, a leading provider of shared e-scooters and e-bikes, to collaborate on this safety training course. It is really important for everyone to understand how to use Lime e-scooters safely - respecting other road users and pedestrians.”

Charlie Norman, Managing Director of DriveTech said: DriveTech works hard with road users, both in the business community through fleet safety training and through its support in the delivery of Police-referred driver retraining courses, to reduce the risk of collisions, deaths and serious injuries. We are really committed to do the same for the emerging scooter community and are therefore pleased to work with Lime to help them achieve this goal with their users in the UK.”

Florence Milner, General Manager of UK and Ireland for Lime said: Safety is our top priority at Lime. We’re proud to partner with the AA and DriveTech - leaders in their field - to offer these important resources to help inform and protect our riders, and other road users. We’re aiming for over 50% of our UK riders to use our school and will be providing a number of incentives to encourage participation across all the trial services we run.
