Lime Celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 5th Anniversary of the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Lime is answering the UN’s call for “urgent solutions for urgent times”
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations’ founding today, we at Lime believe that now more than ever, institutions like the UN are critical to lead the global response to our most pressing challenges. We, as a global company, must do our part to support the UN’s work to make the world more sustainable, equitable, healthy, and just.
In 2015, 193 world leaders committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Goals set targets for ending extreme poverty and hunger, fighting inequality and injustice, and tackling climate change by 2030. Lime fully embraces these Goals, and below are a few of Lime’s initiatives answering the UN’s call to action.
Lime is also engaging our riders to take action in support of the Global Goals. Through our new Lime Action platform, we connect and mobilize Lime riders to join organizations and participate in campaigns in more than a dozen cities to support safer streets, cleaner air, and social justice.
The need is urgent and the time for the Lime community to engage is now.
Goal 13: Climate Action
This week, we announced our Ride Green campaign and a new global partnership with the World Wildlife Foundation, the global leader in conservation and climate advocacy, to help advance our mission of creating pollution-free urban mobility and more livable cities. Along with it, we are excited to share new commitments around our own climate impact.
Lime is committed to be net zero by 2030 and is adopting a rigorous science-based target consistent with the Paris Agreement and SBTi protocol. With nearly one-third of global carbon emissions coming from transportation, we believe micromobility and carbon-free transportation must be the future of mobility. To that end, we are committed to electrifying our entire operations fleet, we charge all scooters on 100% renewable energy globally, and have designed our e-scooters and e-bikes for longer life and to be built from parts easily repaired. As a member of We Are Still In, we join thousands of allied businesses and organizations in fighting for a more sustainable future.
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Air pollution, including carbon emissions, are among the largest public health challenges we face. One way to significantly decrease NOx and SOx pollution and carbon emissions is by greatly reducing traffic and car trips over short distances. At Lime, we offer a multimodal, electric fleet powered by 100% renewable energy. Our fleet of scooters and electric bikes are designed to replace cars for trips under five miles and to complement existing public transportation systems. By reducing car trips and increasing use of public transit, we can help improve air quality and slow climate change, benefitting the health and well-being of all.
Last week, Lime announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with Pedal Me, the leading London e-cargo and passenger bike service. Pedal Me will service Lime’s London fleet of shared e-bikes, meaning that Lime’s London e-bike service will be predominantly fleet vehicle-free. Lime's partnership with Pedal Me will replace an estimated 15,000 vehicle miles over the next three months and 60,000 over the next year, freeing up space on roads to reduce gridlock and cars idling in traffic.
In addition, we partner with local environmental nonprofits around the world to support clean air.
We partnered with RESPIRE, the French National Association for the Improvement of Air Quality and the Defense of Victims of Pollution, to raise funds for cleaner air and lower pollution levels. Our Parisian riders could round up the cost of each trip to the nearest Euro to support RESPIRE.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
As the climate changes, cities are having to respond to more extreme weather events. Nashville faced a severe tornado in March 2020. Lime donated $1.00 for every weekday ride taken to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s Emergency Response Fund. The fund supported local nonprofits providing vital services, both immediate and long term, to Nashville and its residents.
“We’re absolutely devastated by the tragedy this tornado has caused and are eager to do what we can to help our Nashville neighbors,” said Lilli Kraus, Nashville Operations Manager for Lime. “As a native Nashvillian, I know how tough this moment is, but I also know the resiliency and strength of this community and that we’ll work through these challenges together. My staff and I will gladly lend our time, care and support to the city’s recovery and I’m glad Lime is standing firmly behind Nashville."
Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption
At Lime, we have developed a Supplier Code of Conduct with rigorous social, environmental, and ethical responsibilities that all suppliers in our operations and supply chain will be required to implement. Learn more about our Supplier Code of Conduct and our efforts to support Minority-owned business enterprises. In addition, as part of our net zero goal, we will be engaging our supply chain to reduce our climate impact and seeking carbon reduction opportunities throughout Lime’s value chain following the SBTi protocol.
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
In countries around the world, including Germany, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, Lime provides free rides to and from the polls on election day to reduce transportation barriers such as cost, lack of car ownership, and COVID-19-related concerns.
We are proud to once again provide free rides to- and from the polls on U.S. Election Day, November 3. With long lines expected at polling places and more than 40 million voters in the US already casting their votes, we’ve extended our Lime to the Polls campaign to encourage early voting where available. Starting on October 24 (Vote Early Day) and leading up to November 3, riders can use the promotional code LIMETOPOLLS2020 to receive two free rides up to 30 minutes across all vehicles in the Lime app, including JUMP bikes, in the United States.
Lime to the Polls expands on our partnership with When We All Vote, a nonpartisan voter registration organization, co-chaired by Michelle Obama. Earlier this year we teamed up When We All Vote to promote voter registration to riders within the Lime app.
