Lime Launches Roll Call: 2020 Get Out The Vote Effort

With just 100 days to the 2020 U.S. election, concern is mounting that voters will face more challenges casting votes than any other election year in recent memory. Fears over COVID-19, recent measures to weaken voting rights and long lines at poll sites during the primaries can all dissuade voters from voting in one of the most important elections in U.S. history.

At Lime, we’re ready to do our part to make registering and voting easier for our riders to help overcome some of these potential hurdles. That’s why we’re excited to announce our Roll Call initiative as we aim to increase registration, awareness and turnout among our riders in 2020.

We want to make it safe and easy for every community we serve to make their voices heard at the polls this November. That’s why, as part of this new initiative, we’re excited to announce to a range of steps to support our riders’ right to vote:

  • Partnering with When We All Vote, a nonpartisan organization co-chaired by Michelle Obama, to encourage Lime riders to register to vote. Riders will be prompted through in-app messages to connect riders with the Lime + When We All Vote voter registration portal.
  • Participating in the first ever Vote Early Day to help voters avoid lines and crowded polling places and learn about voting by mail.
  • Bringing back Lime to the Polls to provide free, open-air, socially-distant scooter rides on Election Day in all United States cities where Lime operates – reducing barriers to voting with safe transportation.
  • Joining companies like Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, and Comedy Central in calling on Congress to give local election officials the resources needed to extend early in-person voting and make vote by mail available to all eligible voters.

Our partnerships, initiatives, and resources will be hosted on our Roll Call landing page as a resource to our riders.

“Lime is committed to doing everything we can to help people register to vote and safely get to the polls -- whether that’s by mail or in person,” said Wayne Ting, CEO of Lime. “Roll Call builds on our successful 2018 ride to the polls effort to help break down transportation barriers, and this year we’re excited to do more. We are proud to partner with When We All Vote and use our platform to increase turnout for the vital 2020 elections. We’re also encouraging riders to think local and to vote on down-ballot races as well, as this is where decisions are made on street infrastructure, community investment and sustainability projects.”

"When We All Vote is on a mission to increase participation in every election by changing the culture around voting and closing race and age voting gaps," said Crystal Carson, Communications Director at When We All Vote. "Lack of transportation keeps far too many eligible voters from casting their ballot. We are proud to partner with Lime to make voting more accessible and break down transportation barriers by providing free, sustainable rides to the polls and helping Lime riders in cities across the country register to vote through the Lime app."

When We All Vote

"Today there is no more important action for protecting the environment than voting. Lime's Roll Call initiative will play an important role encouraging voters to get to the polls while helping expand access to the transportation voters need," said Carol Browner, Chair of the Board at the League of Conservation Voters, EPA Administrator under President Clinton, and Director of Climate Policy in the Obama White House.

“Over 200 million Americans have an option to vote early - in person or by mail. Vote Early Day’s mission is to help every eligible American learn about those options, and ultimately take advantage of them by October 24, 2020," says Joey Wozniak Project Director, Vote Early Day. "Being the global leader in micromobility, Lime will create new avenues and channels to help their riders have affordable and convenient ways to access the polls early."

"We're delighted to have Lime join our call for Congress to ensure local election officials can provide every voter in every city with safe ways to cast their ballots on Election Day," said Sarah Bonk, Founder of Business for America. "Lime is a leading example of how businesses can help put voters first, support the communities they serve, and use their platform for good."

Roll Call builds on Lime’s successful 2018 “ride to the polls” initiative. Ten percent of all Lime rides on Election Day in 2018 -- the U.S. the midterm elections -- utilized a special Ride to the Polls promo code, making it the most successful promotion in Lime’s history at the time.

We have plenty more in the works for our riders and cities ahead of the election, and we can’t wait to share our upcoming plans and partnerships with you.

If we’ve learned anything this year, it’s to expect the unexpected. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we do know that the core values of community, safety, equity, and accessibility are the foundation upon which we will build our future.

This November, show up for Roll Call and make sure your vote is counted.
