LimeBike Celebrates Achievements of “Keep Houston Rolling” Initiative
It’s been two months since Hurricane Harvey tore through Texas, and while the waters may have receded and the Astros may have won the World Series, communities throughout the state are still working to recover and rebuild.
Earlier this fall, in an effort to help ease the burden of transportation on residents, LimeBike partnered with Houston BCycle to donate 100 of our bikes to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
The program, entitled "Keep Houston Rolling",was launched by both BCycle and Houston Bike Share’s Executive Director Carter Stern to offer bike support to locals who lost their normal mode of transportation during the storm. Even today, many Houstonians still lack reliable mobility options due to flooding that destroyed over 1 million vehicles.
“Our goal [was] to distribute at least 500 free bikes to Houstonians in need by the end of September, and over 1,000 bikes by October 31st,” says Stern.
Thanks to donations from LimeBike, as well as those made by several other cycling organizations and events like 2017’s Burning Man festival, we’re thrilled to report that the program was a success, exceeding its October goal.
“We’ve been proud to be a part of this effort and the Houston bike share community,” says LimeBike’s CEO Toby Sun. “We hope our bikes will continue to useful on the Bayou City’s road to recovery.”
