Lime Rides: Getting Active with Summit to Soul on DC’s Capitol Hill
On Capitol Hill, there’s hustle, and then there’s Kimberly Wattrick.
How else would you describe a woman juggling both a career in corporate finance and ownership of one of the district’s most energizing small businesses?
Welcome to Summit to Soul, a women’s activewear boutique situated on a LimeBike-friendly stretch of 8th Street SE. Being fitness enthusiasts ourselves, we wanted to sit down with the Johns Hopkins SAIS graduate to learn a little bit more about her self-proclaimed side hustle.
“It’s probably more of a hustle and less of a side gig,” Kim admits lightheartedly. “I opened the store a year and a half ago because it seem like there was a need in the market. There are a lot of active women in this neighborhood, and there wasn’t an active workshop around. So I sort of took the plunge and went for it.”
Early in the process, Kim decided on two things to help her startup stand out in a city teeming with entrepreneurs. The first was that only American made, socially responsible, women-owned brands would grace the shelves at Summit to Soul. The second was that she was doing this for the neighborhood.
“From the beginning, I wanted this to be something more than just a store,” she says. “I wanted it to be a community place, a place where people can make friends and meet running partners.”
And so, mixed in with the fashionable leggings and flyout jackets are things like weekly fun runs with the Hill Runners (their group name), yoga classes, nutritionist sessions, even bike tire changing clinics - all open to the public. It’s the kind of social hub where women immediately feel at home among health-conscious peers - and for Kim and her team, that’s exactly the point.
“People have come into the store and commented on how welcoming and calming the space is,” she says. “That’s what we’re striving for. You don’t have to be a marathon runner or a yogi guru. We’re here to serve every customer, regardless of ability.”
With a philosophy like that, it should come as no surprise that Summit to Soul boasts a perfect 5-star rating on Facebook, along with thousands of super-engaged followers on Instagram. If you’re pedaling through Capitol Hill, why not consider parking your LimeBike at the rack immediately out front and checking it out for yourself?
If the name alone doesn’t inspire you pick up a yoga mat or sign up for a group run (it’s meant to invoke the “holistic active lifestyle,” after all), something tells us the incredible vibe here will.
