America's Mile of Cars is about to look a lot more like its Mile of Bikes.

In the early hours of Tuesday evening, council members in National City voted yes on a proposition allowing LimeBike to operate within its city limits. This marks the second San Diego County metro area in two months to partner with the US leader in dockless bike sharing, following the company’s highly successful launch in Imperial Beach last September.

"LimeBike is a new chapter in National City’s evolution of alternative transportation options," says Mayor Ron Morrison. "For many people this transportation option can be a game changer."

Aside from providing National City residents with sustainable, affordable last-mile transportation, the move will likely have an immediate practical benefit: helping to clear up the daily surge of commuter traffic into Naval Base San Diego. On any given morning, the base’s 20,000+ service and staff members can expect a 20-minute wait to enter the base. It’s one of the reasons Commanding Officer and Captain Roy Love can be seen riding his bike to work every day.

“We’re excited to serve commuters going to and from the 8th Street Trolley Station and Naval Base San Diego,” says Colin McMahon, LimeBike Expansion Manager in San Diego. “By encouraging people to bike instead of drive, we hope to alleviate traffic congestion and lessen the time it takes for people to get around, which will ultimately have a lasting, positive impact on the community.”

Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 22nd, LimeBike’s convenient 3G-GPS enabled bikes will be located strategically throughout National City. The initial fleet of 50 bikes will quickly be ramped up to 300 as LimeBike field ops specialists work closely with city and MTS officials to tailor the dockless bike sharing system to the needs of National City residents.

"With National City’s rise in bike infrastructure, it makes sense to offer a shared mobility like Limebike," says Councilmember Mona Rios. "As National City’s MTS Representative, I like to encourage a variety of transportation options for getting around our city."

To celebrate the launch, which officially marks LimeBike’s 30th market in the United States, everyone in National City will enjoy their first ride free! Whether you’re meeting up with friends at Kimball Park, doing some shopping at Westfield Mall, or simply enjoying a long ride along the Sweetwater River, now you can get wherever you’re going in National City on a fun, sustainable, affordable LimeBike!
