It’s a big day for smart mobility.Five years after the launch of its dock-based Citi Bike program, the Big Apple -- the largest city in the US -- is rolling out the first wave of dock-free LimeBikes on Queens’ Rockaway Peninsula.NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg were on hand today, along with elected officials and members of the Lime team, to announce the official launch of 100 of our 3G/GPS-enabled pedal bikes along the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk.
Dotted with coastal views, family-friendly parks and an assortment of shops and restaurants, it’s a perfect neighborhood to kick off this new chapter in New York carbon-free transportation.“We're excited to bring dock-free bikeshare to New York,” said Toby Sun, CEO and co-founder of Lime. “As our bikes hit the streets in the Rockaways, we will work hand in hand with DOT and the local community to make sure residents experience all of the benefits of dock-free bikeshare so that we can help create a greener, healthier, more mobile city.”The number of bikes in the Rockaways is set to double by the end of the month, as 100 of our Lime-E electric assist bikes arrive in New York City. We’ll also be extending our smart bike coverage to Staten Island beginning next week.Today’s NYC Lime launch comes just weeks after another notable capital of urban transportation, Paris, added Lime-S electric scooters to its growing network of clean, smart-mobility alternatives.Welcome to #LimeNation, New York!
