Bike Month Highlights The Need For Improved City Infrastructure

In March of last year, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released the quadrennial American Infrastructure Report Card, which scored a D+ for our nation’s infrastructure.Decades of neglect have left America’s bridges, roads, and other infrastructure deteriorating and in serious need of repair. One of the many ways that climate change will impact the economy is by causing disruptions to North America’s rapidly aging transportation systems.At Lime, we hope that the cities we work with will leverage the data we share with them to ensure transportation projects benefit everyone in their community. As we grow, we will focus on supporting transportation policies that advance economic and social equity in America as well as advocate for more efficient and active transport, like biking.Reducing carbon pollution by biking also reduces long-term adverse climate-health impacts, thus producing cost savings in the near and longer term for government budgets.With the sharing of data, it will be important for cities to establish performance measures that will align federal funding to specific outcomes. It is critical that the next federal authorization of infrastructure spending focus on outcomes such as:
- Enhanced mobility for people and goods;
- Reduced household transportation and housing costs;
- Access to jobs for those without vehicles;
- Improved health and safety for bicyclists via protected bike lanes.
In fact, a study by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts shows that bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure projects create more jobs per federal dollar than road-only highway construction projects. Approaching infrastructure spending in this manner can help erase barriers to economic inclusion for low-income people, communities of color and people with disabilities.As our country moves forward in combating climate change, Lime looks forward to working side-by-side with the cities we call home to help ensure a better, stronger, healthier world for our children by embracing our shared stewardship of this planet and our community.
